GINZAZA is a short film playground inside an underground parking lot. Each edition will be a unique exploration into the short film format. Our goal is to create a space where anyone, from non-movie goers to busy bees, can casually stop by. The films may be short, but we hope you’ll think about them for a long time.

GINZAZA Edition 2： コントロール Control


ピッチャーの手からストライクゾーンに吸い込まれていく白球、
押し潰されながら乗る満員電車、
嬉しさのあまり溢れる涙、
いつの間にか山積みになったタスク……

身の回りを見渡してみると、そこには
様々な「コントロール」が溢れてはいないでしょうか。

今回GINZAZAは、10本の短編映画でこのテーマを
探求してみる事にしました。
上映される10作の短編映画の中には
意図的に制御出来ない制作工程を辿っている作品もあれば
ふとした瞬間に国家や法律など、
巨大な力に直面する作品もあります。

劇中で描かれる、登場人物たちの感情の動きや
画面を彩る光、音の一つひとつを追いながら
「コントロール」という言葉の持つ多様なニュアンスを
自由に感じ取っていただけたのなら嬉しく思います。

The theme for this edition of GINZAZA is CONTROL.

What comes to mind when you think of the word?
A baseball that gets sucked into the strike zone after leaving the pitcher's hand? Being squished inside a packed commuter train in the morning? Tears of joy you can't hold back? Your never-ending to-do list?

All around us, there are varying levels of control working in a myriad of ways.

For this edition, we decided to explore this theme through 10 short films. The line-up includes films that were intentionally made by relinquishing control in the process, films that reveal control by the state or powers that be, films that are meticulously planned, films about being out of control and so on.

Through the stories, the people, the emotions, the images and sounds, we hope that you can freely interpret and find the many facets of control.

On Mondays through Fridays, a film will be screened at the head of every hour from 10:00～19:00. Weekends will feature three programs of 3～4 films. The weekend programs will begin at 11am, 2pm and 5pm. Enjoy the films in a way that suits your mood. All film screenings will be followed by a Q&A video with the director(s).

スイカ割り映画について


今回、GINZAZAはオリジナル映像の制作にチャレンジしました。
それが「スイカ割り映画プロジェクト」です。
映画制作の経験を一切持たないデザイナーの真崎嶺が監督（＝目隠しをされた挑戦者）となり、GINZAZAメンバーが指定したとある映画のワンシーン（＝スイカ）を、実際の映像を観ないままに再現する（＝棒を振り回す）という実験を、夏の浜辺ではなく、真冬の都内で実施したこのプロジェクト。会場では、実際に出来上がった映像を、関連資料と共にお楽しみいただけます。割られた果実を皆でシェアするスイカ割りの醍醐味を、是非一緒に味わいましょう。

What is a Suika-wari Film?


Similar to hitting a piñata, during the summers in Japan, people play a game called “Suika-wari” where people call out directions to help a blindfolded person hit a watermelon. Once it's hit and split, everybody joins in on eating the fruit together.
The Suika-wari Film is an original GINZAZA video project, taking clues from this party game.
GINZAZA’s graphic designer, Ray Masaki who has never made a film before (aka the blindfolded hitter) has to recreate a scene from a film he has never seen (aka hit the watermelon), which he will shoot based only on an annotated script that the GINZAZA team prepared (aka cheering and direction from everyone else).
The whole point of a “Suika-wari” is to share the fruits of the labor together. At GINZAZA, we'll screen Ray’s resulting video along with the scene from the original film to enjoy together.

A bilingual free magazine “ZineZaZa” will be distributed at the venue. The magazine will also contain an original story written by writer Junko Gosho on the theme of “control”! Please check it out.
